Kawasaki Integrated Control System

Kawasaki Integrated Control System (KICS)

A combination of a controllable pitch propeller, side thruster, and high-performance rudder makes it possible to improve the operating performance when entering or exiting ports. By using one joystick and one dial for turning, a vessel can be freely controlled to move forward and backward, as well as sideways and diagonally. The control system also allows the vessel to turn in place.

Equipment wiring diagram

Vessels usually move either forward or backward, and are controlled to do so from the wheelhouse shown in the figure. However, since this system is mainly used for moving toward or away from quay walls when entering and exiting ports, it controls the vessel from a location known as a "wing," which has high visibility of the hull sides and quay walls. Therefore, if this system is to be provided, operation will be made possible from a separate wing as well as from the wheelhouse, so operating equipment will also be provided at the port or starboard sides, as shown in this figure.
