Message from the President

With our 100 years of manufacturing, we aim to contribute to a sustainable world

The Hanshin Diesel Works, Ltd. President Kazuhiko Kinoshita

We, HANSHIN DIESEL, are a manufacturer of marine propulsion diesel engines and comprehensive propulsion equipment. We were founded in 1918 and our main markets are East and Southeast Asia, with a focus on domestic coastal vessels and small ocean-going vessels. As of the end of March 2023, we have shipped approximately 12,000 units (cumulative output of 12,500,000 kW).

We manufacture HANSHIN original low-speed 4-stroke diesel engines for domestic coastal vessels in addition to small-bore 2-stroke diesel engines for small ocean-going vessels under a sub-licensee of MAN Energy Solutions.

Our primary product is the low-speed 4-stroke diesel engine. We are working hard every day to improve the brand power of “HANSHIN” and challenging the global market by manufacturing HANSHIN low-speed 4-stroke diesel engines as well as 2-stroke diesel engines designed by MAN Energy Solutions, which holds the largest market share in the world of ocean-going vessels.

[Selection of low-speed 4-stroke engine]

For ocean-going vessels that don’t start and stop frequently, high-powered 2-stroke diesel engines are most common due to their characteristics. However, for coastal vessels that require frequent starts, stops and load fluctuations, 4-stroke diesel engines are better suited for partial load operation. Therefore, 4-stroke diesel engines are the mainstream choice for coastal vessels. There are low-speed (low rotation speed) and medium/high-speed (medium to high rotation speed) 4-stroke diesel engines, and we specialize in the development, design, and manufacture of low-speed diesel engines. The reasons for this are: 1) it doesn’t require a reduction gearbox to rotate the propeller at low speeds, and 2) it is a high-torque engine that needs to be built strong, making it durable and reliable, which results in 3) the fact that it is accepted that maintenance costs will be low, offsetting the high initial cost of making it sturdy, which results in making the total life cycle cost low. Leveraging these advantages, we have captured half of the domestic market share for tankers that carry dangerous cargo.

We aim to continue providing high-performance systems with low-speed 4-stroke engines and no reduction gearboxes to meet the expectations of our customers.

[Pioneer Spirit]

We have done work that we can be proud of, even if it cannot be said to have been a major commercial success, by leveraging our competitive technology and risk-taking strategy as a specialized manufacturer.

1970s - Development of the world’s first mechanical two-stage injection combustion system (later became a key technology for methanol engines).

1980s - Development of the world’s first computer-remote-controlled engine system for a wind-assisted cargo ship with sails.

1990s - Development of the world’s first low-speed 4-stroke methanol engine that uses waste methanol as fuel, and development of the ultra-long stroke SLT engine aimed at improving thermal efficiency and shortening overall length.

2000s - Development of HANASYS EXPERT (an advanced ship safety management system).

2010s - Development of the world’s first low-speed 4-stroke electronically controlled fuel injection engine.

2020s - Development of the world’s first low-speed 4-stroke LNG gas engine.

2022 - Development of HANASYS5 (HANSHIN NAVIGATION SUPPORT SYSTEM-5th GENERATION; an engine monitoring system).

2023 - Development of the higher thermal efficient “S” version low-speed 4-stroke engine.

2024 - Commercial deployment of a methanol engine aimed at utilizing green methanol.

[Sustainable Spirit]

In particular, competition for marine propulsion engines is about reliability and thermal efficiency (carbon neutrality). It doesn’t allow for the stopping of the engine at sea, and if it operates for a long period without breaking down, maintenance costs can be reduced and waste from spare parts replacement can be minimized. We believe that our mission is to deliver the highest level of safety and peace of mind to our customers, even if it means incurring initial costs, and this belief has been accepted by the high-end market. In addition, we offer our engine monitoring system called HANASYS for fail-safety. This system monitors the operating status of the main engine both inside the ship and land base at all times, enabling quick identification of troubles and appropriate responses.

The second focus is on how to improve thermal efficiency in a world moving towards carbon neutrality. This means reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and reducing CO2 emissions. We have been developing various epoch-making new technologies as mentioned in the “Pioneer Spirit.” Currently, we are focusing on developing methanol engines that utilize carbon-neutral green methanol. As a company with a long history of technical expertise, we are promoting this technology with confidence and pride. While other groundbreaking new technologies cannot be achieved in a brief space of time, we aim to steer towards meeting the needs of our customers, even if only a little.
